In My Own Time: A Portrait of Karen Dalton

Richard Peete, Robert Yapkowitz United States 2020 85 min Documentary

If you have once discovered the singing voice of the American folk singer Karen Dalton, there is no turning back. Husky, soulful and dynamic with a lingering Billie Holiday-like phrasing that is reminiscent of a jazz wind instrument in the wee hours. You will want to listen to her again, and again, and again. In the early 60’s she arrives in Greenwich Village from Oklahoma, with lost teeth after fights with her ex-husbands and in company with her banjo and a twelve-string guitar. She played on stages alongside Tim Hardin and Bob Dylan, who sometimes accompanied her on the harmonica. Wim Wenders is producing this tender portrait of an underrated artist that is worshiped both by Bob Dylan as well as Nick Cave and Joanna Newsom.
