The Year Before the War

Dāvis Sīmanis Latvia Lithuania 2021 95 min Live action

Europe, 1913. The year before the start of World War I and new ideas are popping up everywhere. A surging and imaginative depiction of Europe in radical change. We get to follow Peter, the doorman from Riga, who claims his name is Hans, during a frantic, tragicomic, slightly surrealistic odyssey where he keeps getting drawn into central events. He’s psychoanalyzed by Sigmund Freud, has a romance with Mata Hari in Paris, participates in revolutionary plans in both communistic, anarchistic, proto-fascistic and nationalistic camps and visits the Swiss Monte Veritá community. Striking story that reminds us how quickly events can take place. Gorgeous black and white cinematography that oozes German expressionism!
